WEEK 2 - Research Project Details

The research project I am working on this semester involves cyanoacrylate (super glue) fuming. This technique is used in a forensic lab to find latent fingerprints. "Cyanoacrylate is a chemical method for detecting latent fingermarks on non-porous surfaces such as glass, plastic, etc. The technique relies on the deposition of polymerized cyanoacrylate ester on residues of latent fingermarks. This method leaves a white residue where the latent print develops when conducting this method."

I will begin planting my fingerprints and using carbon black powder to retrieve the fingerprints. Then I can identify at least five minutiae points that I will compare to the materials I am testing using cyanoacrylate fuming. I will use glass, plastic, metal, and aluminum materials in the cyanoacrylate fuming process. I will then determine what material shows the most minutiae points to the powdered print.
